Things To Do in State Forests This Time Of Year https://floridastateforests.org/things-to-do-in-state-forests-this-time-of-year/ Sun, 06 Jan 2019 04:14:45 +0000 https://floridastateforests.org/?p=929 Look up! Sandhill cranes are now heading south into Florida and can frequently be heard before being seen. Normally, flocks ranging in size from a few to hundreds can be spotted catching a tailwind at varying elevations or going in circles as they ride a thermal.

Also, double-check that the buzzard soaring overhead isn’t actually an eagle or Red-tailed hawk.

Mutual Respect of Recreationists https://floridastateforests.org/mutual-respect-of-recreationists/ Mon, 01 Oct 2018 04:18:14 +0000 https://floridastateforests.org/?p=937 One of the things I enjoy most about recreating on Florida’s forests is seeing other people recreating as well; taking photos, hiking, biking, riding horses, paddling, and fishing. It’s especially refreshing to see younger generations participating in recreation activities. It is important that youth appreciate and find value in the outdoors.

My First Forest Hike (Because That is a Fitting If Unimaginative Title) https://floridastateforests.org/my-first-forest-hike-because-that-is-a-fitting-if-unimaginative-title/ Mon, 07 May 2018 04:29:20 +0000 https://floridastateforests.org/?p=950 "Absolutely beautiful!"

"Another great hike."

"Wet trail but saw a Florida panther."

I read a lot of these. You see, part of my work is to process Trailwalker comment cards for the Florida Forest Service Recreation Unit, so I come across the condensed adventures of intrepid trail walkers every day. And each time, my curiosity is piqued more than before. I have so many questions, like “What’s all the hiking hullabaloo?” or “What is really out there?” or “Why am I using the word ‘hullabaloo’?” I finally decided to find the answers to these questions on a hike for myself.
